The Rules of Verse Speaking – and how Shakespeare Breaks Them!
The Rules of Verse Speaking – and how Shakespeare Breaks Them!

Introduction

With the recent surge in popularity of period dramas, both on stage and screen, the demand for classically trained actors has reached new heights. With this, a mastery of Verse Speaking is a must! Shakespeare’s words have been long held as the gold standard of the classical stage and also now very much inform how we handle heightened language on screen.

Changes in audition processes have also led to an increase in actors being asked to perform Shakespearean monologues at the drop of a hat. This can leave many feeling intimidated and uncertain about how to prepare effectively.

Course Outline

Suitable for actors of all skill levels, this online workshop is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the basic rules for acting in verse, essential for any period drama work on screen. Additionally actors will learn how Shakespeare breaks / manipulates these rules and equip you with all core skills you need to tackle your next role.

For a more in-depth exploration of Shakespearean acting techniques, consider complementing this workshop with our Secrets of Acting Shakespeare: First Folio Technique online workshop.
