Sarah Hannah

Sarah Hannah is a regular at the BBC working both in-front of the camera and within the casting department for the likes of Holby City and Casualty. Bringing her experience of working on stage and on screen, in addition to working closely with Casting Website Spotlight and the popular Monologue Slam, Sarah will focus on enhancing your presence on camera and cover the technical skills required of a professional screen actor.

Without hesitation, Sarah will expose weaknesses in your performance. As an experienced coach working with actors of all levels, Sarah has an impressive 100% Success Rate for Drama School Auditions and continues to support emerging talent through whichever path they take.

Having worked with Dame Judi Dench, Mark Rylance, Emma Thompson, Sam Mendes and Sir Michael Gambon, James is giving you a unique opportunity to develop your craft and shoot two fresh cinematic scenes for your showreel as part of this Masterclass.

Leon Lopez

Leon Lopez is a British actor, television and film director. Leon’s most recently been directing shows including Death in Paradise, Emmerdale and Coronation Street. Leon’s previous work includes the feature film Soft Lad shown on Netflix UK as well as Almost Saw The Sunshine, available on Amazon Prime. Leon’s extensive experience as a screen actor and Director, working with some of the UK’s biggest names he will bring a unique and fresh style to your showreel scenes.

Ifan Meredith

Ifan Meredith is a British actor and producer with a breadth of experience both on stage and screen, having led on some of the UK’s biggest Films and TV shows in addition to shows by the Royal Shakespeare Company, including The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet.

Ifan will show actors a unique insight into preparing for a role and how to analyse a script in depth for TV & Film. Students will discover the art of using their voice effectively and how to keep your performance fresh with every take, an important aspect of single camera production used in Film and High End TV like Netflix.

Ben Cogan

“It’s me and the actor versus the director”

After working as a casting director for the BBC for more than 10 years, Ben Cogan is now giving you the opportunity to work with him on an intimate level during our Masterclass. The role of the casting director places them into the heart of a dramatic creation, through working with writers and producers, they’re equipped to join forces with directors and introduce actors new characters.

‘My workshops consist of a in depth discussion about the casting process in relation to the actor, how to prepare & perform in an audition and some honest advice about how to design your CVs, approaching casting directors and help guide you through all areas of the casting process. I also will assign you scenes on the day to work with another – and work with you … giving direction, praise and constructive criticism. I’m then happy to answer any questions you may have.

Jane Ashmore

Jane Ashmore is an award-winning TV and Film Director, known for her slick style on shows such as EastEnders, Coronation Street, and Emmerdale. Jane has worked with some of the UK’s biggest soap stars and specialises in multi-cam direction working at a fast pace to meet the fast turn around demands of British TV. Jane will showcase the demands of actors on UK TV and teach students the skills required to work on set at a professional level.

Richard Lynn

Having directed the UK’s top soap stars in over 100 episodes of BBC’s EastEnders, Richard Lynn is now giving you the opportunity to take advantage of his actor orientated direction and experience the fast pace of a professional television actor.

Sarah Hannah - Week 1

To kickstart your Masterclass, Sarah will introduce you to the career of being a screen actor while providing you with a practical experience, covering shot sizes, eye lines, and personal continuity. Throughout the week you will film and review scenes, supported by Director’s comments, giving you maximum on-screen time to build your confidence working on set.

Ifan Meredith - Week 2

Having built confidence on camera and understanding the format of a working set, Week Two will arm you with the skills required to achieve a convincing performance and deliver it fresh with every take. Tackling a range of scripts, under the guidance of experts, you will develop your own method to analysing text, supported by vocal and physical exercises to aid relaxation on a film set and release required emotions.

Key Outcomes: Psychological Gestures, Breathing, Posture, Emotions, Script Analysis.

How to Find your Character in Life – Research and Development outside the Script with Ifan Meredith

  • Using real-life as inspiration—Learn how to find your character in the world around you and the importance of having a secret story that drives you in every role. How would your character react?

How to See & Listen: A Fresh Performance on Every Take with Ifan Meredith

  • Exercises will be covered to keep actors SEEING afresh, both characters and surroundings. Techniques will be applied on how to use the lens, how close one can look, and how to tap into that rich interior thinking space so near the lens. 
  • You will learn to check the nerves and keep a sense of the scene, with attention to breathing.

Film Scenes using new techniques led by Ifan Meredith

    • Each couple in turn will have the opportunity to rehearse publicly and be directed by Ifan.
    • These scenes will be filmed and summarised with playback and discussion from the class with Ifan.

Script Analysis with Ifan Meredith

  • Breaking down a script is a very personal process. Learn Ifan’s unique approach to tackling a large volume of material at once and building a fuller narrative from individual sides.

Physicality and Voice with Ifan Meredith using the Script

  • Vocal technique: structured to aid relaxation on a film set and release required emotions.
  • The importance of physical relaxation will be highlighted. Exercises are given to build muscular strength and develop increased emotional freedom.
  • Link vocal technique to acting exercises and the text of the script.

TV vs Film & Finding Work/Auditioning as an Actor - Week 3

In your Third Week, you will discover the increased pace of acting in TV/Sitcom led by highly established British Television directors. Working in a multi-cam environment, your technical screen skills will be pushed as you learn the importance of hitting marks and working the active lens. To stand out in this competitive industry, you will be armed with the confidence and know-how of the audition process, including self-taping, working with casting directors and building a profile.

Key Outcomes: Physical awareness for screen and multi-directional filming, Learning the demands of tight schedules and little rehearsal times, finding work and succeeding in the audition room.

TV Director Masterclass – Richard Lynn/Steve Finn

  • You will be given the opportunity to put all you have learnt so far into practice and spend two days working with an experienced TV Director, working on prepared scenes, filming and being directed in a professional environment.

Multi-Cam – Richard Lynn/Steve Finn

  • Multi-cam performance with Richard Lynn/Steve Finn in contrast to yesterdays’ lesson. This will give actors an invigorating experience in working on a TV set, and how to work out of sequence. Actors will be pushed to their limits in handling multiple storylines and being able to deliver on-call.

Casting Director Masterclass with Ben Cogan

  • Led by top Casting Directors, this day will enable you to uncover what they expect from you, and indeed, what you can expect from them. This session will include a Q&A.

Self-Taping – What You Need and How To Succeed

  • Led by Nathan Caselton, you will unlock the secrets of self-taping and discover mistakes you’re making that are stopping you from making it to the audition room. Following detailed advice, you will film your own self-tape putting new skills into practice.

Working as an Actor in a Competitive Industry – Sarah Hannah

  • Professional actor and tutor in Advanced Screen Acting Technique, Sarah will cover the secrets of the casting process, how to improve your audition and sight reading techniques and how to slate with a difference. You will learn audition how to make your audition stand out for all the right reasons.

Showreel Production - Week 4

The final week of your course is focused on filming two professional scenes for your acting showreel, while giving you the chance to work alongside a professional film crew to experience what it takes to work in-front of camera. Scenes, which are written bespoke for you, are shot on RED and then be professionally edited, colour-graded and sound designed for use on platforms such as Spotlight, IMDb and Mandy.com.

Key Outcomes: Experience the demands of working as part of the crew. Rehearse and Shoot Two Professional Scenes, shot in Cinema-Style with Crew & Director at Pinewood Studios.

Course Schedule

You will attend the Masterclass from Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm at Regent’s University, Regents Park, Central London. The final week of your course is dedicated to filming your showreel held at Pinewood Studios, with a call time of 8am and wrap time of 6pm. We highly recommend making yourself available after class should lesson’s be extended, or filming take longer than scheduled.

Filming Locations

The final week is held at Pinewood Studios, which is connected via a free shuttle bus service to Uxbridge Tube Station, Gerrards Cross, Slough and South Ruislip all with good links into Central London and surrounding areas. You will need to make your own way to Pinewood. Filming may take place on location near to the studios. Transportation will be arranged.

The free shuttle bus operates morning and evening. If we are filming outside of the studios, transportation will be arranged to it from Pinewood.
