Sue Dunderdale is a British Film & TV Director known for her unique approach to fostering new talent and established award-winning performers, having directed the likes of Helena Bonham Carter and Clarke Peters. Alongside her notable theatre work, Sue has established a reputation as one of the UK’s top continuous drama directors, having Directed EastEnders, Coronation Street, Holby City and Casualty.
Sue has a reputation for introducing new and exciting talent to the screen, having given early television parts to Ian Hart, Johnny Lee Miller, Lyndsey Marshal and Rupert Evans. This course offers a unique opportunity for you to learn from and build a working relationship with a highly experienced director.
TRAINING DAY: This will concentrate on the importance of back story in the creation and presentation of a character. You will create the underlying energy which informs the characterisation. This will involve both improvisation and working on sections of script to create backstory from both fact and imagination. There will be exercises both off and on camera and as part of the process there will be explanation of the technical demands of working on camera.
TRAINING DAY: Having understood the importance of character back story the second day will focus on “doing”. You will understand the action of a scene reveals structure, and allows you to plot and then play the journey of a character through a full film/episode and through a scene. Sue Dunderdale will apply both play and film scripts in order for you to work out changes of action and discover what the actions of a scene are. This will also involve practicing on camera prior to rehearsal the following day.
SCENE REHEARSAL: Working closely with the Director, students will be given scenes suited to casting type, strength and natural performance, where they will gain an understanding of rehearsal techniques to ensure confidence in performance on the shoot day.
DAYS 4 AND 5 (8am to 6pm)
SHOWREEL FILMING: Students will use their new skills and confidence to shoot the scene with a professional crew. Content will be expertly edited and ideal for use as a new showreel or added to existing content.
