Location: Pinewood Studios | Tutor: Carolyn Pickles | Time: 10am – 5pm
Produce convincing characters and learn the art of screen performance with English actress of stage and screen Carolyn Pickles. Having led on British television for over 35 years, Carolyn is now giving you the unique opportunity to develop your acting skills on this intimate and screen-focused 5 day course. Ideal for those who have had an introduction to acting and wish to take their understanding further, you will be immersed in unique screen acting techniques at Pinewood Studios and led by a highly experienced tutor.
Over Carolyn’s 35 year career, she has led on award-winning British Drama including Broadchurch, Vera, Law & Order UK in addition to EastEnders, Emmerdale and Holby City.
Unique from our Showreel Courses, this 5 days of process takes students on a journey of exercises designed to free your performance from nerves and tendency to ‘overwork’ on screen. Techniques developed will be applied to use on monologues and duologues, which are filmed and then critiqued by Carolyn. All footage will be available after completion on the course for future development.
The week will aim to free screen actors from extraneous activity and overthinking, so that the performance becomes genuine and uncluttered. At the beginning of the week we explore how to look, hear and breathe on set, and how to create our backstories. The exercises employed will be fed into the scenes which you will receive in advance.
Exercises will be covered to keep actors SEEING afresh, both characters and surroundings. Techniques will be applied on how to use the lens, how close one can look and how to tap into that rich interior thinking space so near the lens. You will learn to check the nerves and keep a sense of the scene, with attention to breathing.
How to LISTEN genuinely and inform your response, both emotionally and physically. Exercises will be covered in how to stop ones lines going dead on set, and how to check the pitch of your voice as you embed correct breathing to support the listening.
How to discover or create ones BACKSTORY, often given so little information in the scenes. During this day you will mark your scripts in preparation for filming.
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY:
Each couple in turn will have the opportunity to rehearse publicly and be directed by Carolyn. These scenes will be filmed and summarised with playback and discussion from the class with Carolyn.
